From the diamond to the exam room

A career built on discipline, teamwork, and service — first as a professional athlete, then as a physician dedicated to accessible, high-quality urgent care.

🩺

The physician

Dr. Brandon Monk is an urgent care physician with UMD Urgent Care who has diagnosed and treated more than 22,000 patients across Brooklyn (Williamsburg), Astoria, Long Island City, Flushing, and other high-volume New York sites. As a sole provider he has managed teams of medical assistants and front-office staff while caring for patients from infancy through advanced age.

Clinical range includes complex facial and eyelid laceration repair, fracture care, outpatient IV therapy for serious infections, and high-volume management of acute and chronic illness — from rashes and Lyme disease to hypertension emergencies.

Board certified by the American Board of General Practice (Medicine and Surgery, 2023), NY & GA licensed, and recognized on Doximity among Brooklyn primary care physicians (#49 in Brooklyn primary care per Doximity ranking).

The athlete

A 1999 Phenix City Little League World Series champion at age 12, a 2004 Georgia AAA state champion at LaGrange High (shortstop and pitcher with a low-to-mid-90s fastball), and a 7th-round Atlanta Braves draft pick in 2005.

In his first pro season he was named Gulf Coast League Rookie Ball Player of the Month (August 2005) for his hitting, finishing the GCL year at .269 AVG · 10 doubles · 3 HR · 18 RBI across 46 games.

Raised by strong male role models — including his father, coach Walter Monk, and Tony Rasmus (father of big leaguers Colby and Cory Rasmus) — he learned early that hard work and goal-driven discipline win championships on the field and in life.

1999 · Little League World Series champions

At twelve, Brandon helped the Phenix City, Alabama team win a Little League World Series championship — learning early that daily work, clear goals, and trust in teammates can carry you to the biggest stage.

That chapter set the competitive identity he carried into high school, the draft, and medicine: prepare thoroughly, compete with composure, put the team first.

Mentors who set the standard

Walter Monk Father · Coach

Coached on the Phenix City Little League staff and later with the 2004 LaGrange High AAA Georgia State Championship program. Leadership, accountability, and work ethic — at home and on the field.

From the same 1999 championship circle — father of Major Leaguers Colby and Cory Rasmus. Modeled preparation, toughness, and a long-term view of the game.

LaGrange High · 2004 Georgia AAA State Champions

Under coach Donnie Branch, Brandon was a two-way force — shortstop and a pitcher with a low-to-mid-90s fastball. In 2004 the Grangers won the AAA Georgia State Championship, with Walter Monk on the coaching staff.

Arm strength, middle-infield instincts, and championship experience made him a top Southeast prospect — and led Atlanta to select him in the 2005 MLB Draft.

Pro career · Atlanta Braves

Selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 7th round of the 2005 MLB June Amateur Draft (overall pick ~227) from LaGrange High School. Signed for approximately $130,000 with total draft-related compensation reported over $230,000 including bonuses.
